In cooperation with the municipality of Nice and the National Education, rugby is arriving in the schools of Nice through the Stade Niçois in two forms: The oval ball in primary school and a rugby class in middle school. The Municipality and the National Education are delighted to see rugby entering schools for its educational virtues of respect, courage, mutual help, and sharing.

rugby_ecole_nice.jpg First try, the opening of a rugby class at Victor Duruy Middle School, located in the Nice-east area, which will be the supporting institution of a 6th-grade class project with a rugby option, adding 2 hours of sports per week, in cooperation with the Stade Niçois. The goal of this initiative is to be able to practice rugby within the school framework.

The students of this section (about 30 children) will be distributed over two 6th-grade classes and will meet once a week at the Lafayette stadium to practice rugby. The Stade Niçois, through Florian BEGUINE and Grégory BALDACCHINO (project manager) and Jérémy RUIZ, will be responsible for preparing and leading the sessions.

The establishment of this section is a first step towards the development of rugby in the Paillon valley, before the opening of a Stade Niçois rugby school in this area from the start of the 2014 school year.

For “The oval ball in primary schools,” it is a practice of rugby in primary schools, with rules adapted for beginners. The aim of this action is to develop and promote rugby in Nice. Two learning cycles will be implemented from now until next June. 16 cycle 3 primary classes (CM1 and CM2) will participate in the trainings conducted by Florian BEGUINE and Jérémy RUIZ followed by the final tournament.

The participating schools are: Saint Isidore, Jules Vernes, La Digue 2, Les Moulins, Saint Andrée de la Roche, La Condamine, Jean Macé 1 and Jean Macé 2, and Jules Ferry.

A great initiative by the Stade Niçois that will allow middle schools to become a real nursery for young rugby talents, reminiscent of the 1980s when middle schools like Ségurane, the first “Promotion Sport” class (the sports-study programs of the time), or Port Lympia, Parc Impérial, or Don Bosco all boasted teams in the UNSS.

Fate’s nod, Duruy Middle School also played in the local championship…
