Saint-Roch Hospital is changing its appearance and purpose. This is what Christian Estrosi announced yesterday morning in front of the forecourt of this historic site, which since 1850, has housed healthcare services that will be transferred in the coming weeks to Pasteur II Hospital.
We are moving from the 19th-century hospital to that of the 21st century!
But what to do with a building which, although it has been patched up over time, still retains a certain charm?
This place where pain is treated will, in a way, continue to be so, even if the type of afflictions addressed will change.
Its future use has thus been decided by turning it into a police station that will house the municipal police (including the urban supervision center for the 1,500 cameras that will eventually be installed in the city), the national police (which would leave the outdated building on avenue Foch and other peripheral locations), and other services related to public safety. Other municipal services (nursery, neighborhood associations’ center) will also find their place there.
The funding for the operation (acquiring the building, which belongs to CHU of Nice, is estimated at 50 million euros) will be offset by a real estate project involving the less prestigious part of the building, which will be developed into housing and offices, along with an underground parking lot of about 400 spaces.
In conclusion, out of a total area of nearly 40,000 mยฒ, half will be allocated for public use, while the other half will be for commercial purposes.
There’s still work to do to finalize everything: Christian Estrosi mentioned that discussions with the State services and CHU are already well advanced. Normally, everything is on track, and the operations should proceed within reasonable time frames.
Starting in May, the relocation of medical services will free up the buildings for the next phase of operations, which is expected to last 4 years.
At the same time, beautification and security works on Place Marshall will be initiated.
