Senatorial Elections: The Macronist Wave Does Not Surge

Latest News

As every three years, the grand electors were renewing half of the Senate on Sunday.

The Macronist wave did not sweep over the Senate as it did the National Assembly in June. Following the renewal of half of the Upper House during the senatorial elections on Sunday, September 24, and before any potential alliances, La Rรฉpublique en Marche is expected to have only between 23 and 27 senators, compared to 29 previously.

A stinging defeat as the Republicans and their allies, however, strengthen their position with at least 171 seats, compared to 142 before.

On the left, the Socialists are limiting the damage but still losing a small handful of seats: while they had 86 seats, they should now have 67 to 71 representatives in the Luxembourg Palace.

As for the Communists, according to their calculations, they should retain enough deputies โ€“ at least ten โ€“ to maintain their parliamentary group.

Finally, on the other side of the political spectrum, the National Front, which had gained two seats in the Luxembourg Palace in 2014, does not win any new seats this time.
