Several thousand people demonstrated this Saturday afternoon in Ventimiglia against the closure of European borders to migrants.
The procession, composed of many Italians but also French, Germans, Dutch, and Spaniards, marched through the city in a good atmosphere, but under heavy police surveillance, up to the French border before turning back.
The demonstration, on the occasion of July 14th, was organized by numerous associations involved in welcoming migrants.
According to a statement from the organizers, its objective was “a mobilization to denounce the brutality of national and international migration governance policies.”
The goal was also to “claim the necessity of a European residence permit and the right to mobility” in Europe for migrants.
