This Thursday, June 6, the unveiling of the work in tribute to Simone Veil took place, led by Christian Estrosi, the mayor of Nice. After naming a street after Simone Veil, renaming the school group “Baumettes II” as “Simone Veil-Baumettes”, installing a commemorative plaque at the address where she was born, at 50 Avenue Georges Clรฉmenceau, and publishing a bilingual French-Niรงois booklet about the life and political work of Simone Veil. The City of Nice once again pays tribute to the emblematic Nice native.
Under the European flag, Simone Veil’s bust rested there this Thursday morning. Christian Estrosi, the mayor of Nice, and Sissy Piana, the Franco-Greek sculptor, unveiled to everyone the bronze bust of the first woman president of the European Parliament. She now resides at the Mediterranean University Center in Nice, making Nice the eighth place of tribute to the distinguished Simone Veil.
A Touching Ceremony
“The names of Simone Veil and the Jacobs are now more deeply embedded in the fabric of our city,” Christian Estrosi thanks the Foundation for Strasbourg for choosing the city of Nice to honor Simone Veil.
In the presence of her son Jean Veil, who speaks of the love Simone Veil had for her birthplace, Nice, and its citizens. “We continue your battles, madame!” says the mayor of Nice emotionally, recounting the journey of the brilliant Nice native. Christian Estrosi also thanks the Franco-Greek sculptor, Sissy Piana for her work, stating that she “managed to give a soul to the bronze. That is the mark of great artists.”
