Smash LogDown: the new weekly “Super Smash Bros.” tournament will kick off on Thursday.

Latest News

Every Saturday, a competition took place in Nice focused on the video game Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. However, much to everyone’s surprise, the organizers of the Smash Azur Community announced this Monday that a second iteration will occur weekly, starting Thursday, July 30th.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the best-selling fighting game in history, has many fans around the globe. Regularly, these fans organize local tournaments to compete against other players to improve their skills or simply to have fun. In Nice, a tournament takes place every Saturday. But starting Thursday, another tournament will happen each week. The Smash LogDown will begin at 7:00 PM for the 32 players registered at LOGIN, located at 15 Avenue Notre Dame. The premises have been reserved for this event and will open at 6:00 PM to allow registered participants to warm up. LOGIN also has forty screens available, so the organizers encourage the public to bring as many Nintendo Switch consoles as possible to facilitate multiple matches.

The tournament will pit 32 players against each other. Each match will be played in a best-of-three format, one-on-one, with each person having two lives. Therefore, the first to win two rounds wins the match. This changes when there are only eight participants left: the maximum number of rounds increases to five, and the first to win three rounds takes it. But defeat is not the end, as the losers will also face off to secure their spot on the podium.

A Resumption With Strict Health Rules

The Smash Azur Community has only recently resumed tournaments due to Covid-19. These new editions, therefore, impose strict new rules to limit the spread of the disease. “All players are required to wear a mask throughout the tournament,” explains Victor Salmon, one of the organizers of Thursday’s competition. He adds that any violation of this rule will result in a warning, and if a second warning needs to be issued, the person concerned “will automatically lose their next match or be disqualified.” He also insists on minimizing physical contact as much as possible and regularly washing hands during the event.
