Socialist Primaries: Televised Debate Evening at the PS 06 Federation

Latest News

After the blackout of last Sunday’s voting results and the ensuing controversies (see box), socialist leaders and activists gathered at the Biscarra street headquarters to watch the televised debate between the two runoff candidates.
The evening was peaceful, with fair play between supporters of each candidate being obligatory, and the verdict was fair: “parity.” Thus, everyone went home, planning to meet again next Sunday when the suspense will finally end, with omens, predictions, and other polls giving way to the true and ultimate expression of democracy: the vote.

ps06.jpg Patrick Allemand, First Secretary of the 06 Federation of the PS: “The debate was of high quality, and both candidates showed that each could legitimately aspire to victory. However, I think Franรงois Hollande was able to confirm his advantage over Martine Aubry, especially on the subject of the economy.

I think that next Sunday he will confirm his first-place position, and I venture to predict a score of 52/55%.”

Anne-Julie Clary’s comment, regional councilor, who supports Martine Aubry: “Faced with a Franรงois Hollande who was often hesitant, Martine Aubry once again showed us the project with which she intends to bring about change in 2012, with clear ideas and a real willingness to change the system. Moreover, I believe tonight, she further demonstrated her tenacity, her determination to face these changes. This is what the French expressed as a demand in the first round, notably through the Montebourg vote. This is what is expected next Sunday from the left’s candidate, and this is what we hope for from the first female President of the Republic.”

Xavier Garcia, PS spokesperson and co-organizer of the primary in the department: “Franรงois Hollande had an advantage of several points over Martine Aubry before this debate. In sporting terms, he had to avoid losing, especially by a knockout.

I believe that each candidate conveyed the familiar image of themselves that everyone already knew. Personally, I think there won’t be a shift in the electorate’s orientation from the first round.

The only surprise could come if new voters, in large numbers, decide to vote next Sunday.

Without that, I am giving Franรงois Hollande the win even though I admire Martine Aubry, who has been a very good opponent.”
