Nice received the Eurocities award for innovative initiatives. This European distinction commends the establishment of three community restaurants for those over 55. A project designed to combat isolation and support purchasing power.
In Braga, Portugal, the city of Nice was honored. Yesterday, Jennifer Salles, deputy appointed for seniors and solidarity, received the Eurocities award for innovative initiatives for Nice’s community restaurants. This award recognizes urban actions that enhance citizens’ lives.
Three establishments have been created: Alegria in November 2023 at the Espace Magnan, La Pignata in June 2024 at the Saint-Jean d’Angely independent living residence, and La Maiouneta, open since December 2024 at the AnimaNice Maioun dóu Rai center. These venues offer complete meals for three euros, accessible to holders of the Pass 55+ card.
Christian Estrosi, mayor of Nice, welcomed this recognition: “This award rewards the constant efforts of the City of Nice and its CCAS in favor of seniors. Better supporting the most modest, particularly our elders, is a major societal challenge. Through initiatives like our community restaurants, which have already served more than 17,000 meals, so many moments of sharing and dignity have been offered. A true proof that solidarity takes on its full meaning when it is concretely embodied.”
A meal, a social connection
These restaurants are not mere cafeterias. They also offer opportunities for interaction and activities. Meals are prepared by the central kitchen, under the direction of the chef nicknamed “ratatouille”. Two menus are offered: with or without meat.
The structures accommodate up to 50 people per service. Registration is mandatory with the Nice Municipal Office for Seniors. Payment is made on site.
The municipal council has recently expanded access to these restaurants to all holders of the Pass 55+, not just those exempt from tax. This is a way to broaden the impact of the initiative, without income conditions.
