Sound radars are making their debut in seven cities in France, including Nice.

This Tuesday, January 4th, a noise radar for two-wheelers will be inaugurated in Yvelines. This device will be extended to several other cities in France, including Nice, over the coming weeks.

These radars, soon to be installed in Nice, Paris, Toulouse, Bron (Lyon metropolis), Rueil Malmaison (Hauts-de-Seine), and Villeneuve-le-Roi (Val-de-Marne), will initially be tested without recording any infractions.

Currently, the maximum noise level is specific to each vehicle and is recorded on the registration certificate. These radars will allow the maximum threshold to be set at 90 decibels. Until now, only stationary checks could determine whether this noise level was respected or not.

In three months, this experimental phase could result in fourth-class fines, meaning a fixed penalty of โ‚ฌ135, reduced to โ‚ฌ90 if paid within 15 days.

The Ministry of Ecology states in a press release that this experiment aims to “identify control solutions that could be approved to combat noise pollution caused by vehicles.”

“Lack of sleep, loss of property value: noise has a cost,” writes Barbara Pompili, Minister of Ecological Transition, on Twitter.
