Les Nuits du Sud, the 20th edition, opened its doors at the Grand Jardin Square in Vence.
A unique, intense moment during which the city travels to the sounds of music from the four corners of the world.
This year, many artists have gathered for the festival. From Ky-Marli, and Olivia Ruiz to Jupiter & Okwess, Peter Doherty, Harel Shashal, and even Goran Bregovic.
And it’s not over yet…
6 artists, 6 rhythms, and 6 countries to open this 20th edition. The festival took on reggae vibes on Thursday evening with the youngest son of Bob Marley (Ky-MANi). Many spectators came to listen with family or friends.
It has been 6 years since the youngest son of Bob Marley ventured into music, and he is doing quite well, just like his brothers. He even indulged in the luxury of covering three of his father’s most legendary songs.
Then Olivia Ruiz took her place late at night. Arriving on stage in a black and white dress, she began her first piece with an English song before continuing with her French titles.
On stage, she seems unstoppable, wishing to commune with her fans who ask for nothing less. They do not hesitate to sing along with the refrains and some of her songs.
The evening was paused around 12 AM for a few moments to allow Olivia Ruiz to catch her breath. She reappeared afterward to conclude the first night beautifully with the titles from her latest album: “A nos corps aimants”.
On Friday, it was Jupiter & Okwess’s turn to open the second Nuit du Sud. They took their audience to the Congo with their delightful, slightly psychedelic funk. The audience seemed captivated, and the square did not empty; on the contrary, many sat in cafes to be lulled by the music while enjoying their beers.
Then it was time for Peter Doherty to take the stage during the break. Unlike Olivia Ruiz, who started softly, he immediately awakened the Grand Jardin square with his terrific English rock. He performed songs from his latest album “Hamburg Demonstrations”. The square vibrated with the singer. The concert continued late into the night.
Finally, last night featured the third Nuit du Sud. Again, two artists shared the stage: Harel Shachal & The Ottomans and Goran Bregovic. This third night took on yet another different note. Rock gave way to Gypsy and Balkan Jazz in the early evening. The group took its audience on a blend of New York jazz and traditional instruments. Soon, as with the other singers, a communion was established with the audience. The stars shone in the sky as on stage.
In the middle of the evening, there was a change of artists. Goran Bregovic took the stage. He is one of the most famous composers in Europe. A Serbo-Croatian, Goran Bregovic is a former punk who innovates with grace and depth, combining traditional and modern, electric, rock instruments that each of the soundtracks “Time of the Gypsies”, “Black Cat, White Cat” reveals. His music is generous and popular, the music of celebration, of all celebrations. He invites us to Vence to join the table of guests for this 20th edition celebration!
