The “Spring of Researchers,” organized in the Alpes-Maritimes from May 18 to 29, is a completely free event aimed at introducing the general public to the vitality of research in the PACA region by presenting recent discoveries or those related to current events.
Diabetes is a dysfunction in the regulation of blood glucose concentration (glycemia). The two most common forms of this disease are Type 1 diabetes and Type 2 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is caused by the destruction of certain cells in the pancreas called beta cells (ร), which produce insulin. This results in the loss of insulin production, a hormone necessary for the regulation of blood sugar, especially after a meal. Type 2 diabetes is caused by an insensitivity of certain body cells to insulin.
Type 1 diabetes affects 1 in 300 individuals in France and accounts for 10% of all people with diabetes. Currently, Type 1 diabetes is treated with daily insulin injections (insulin-dependent diabetes). Researchers from Inserm have recently discovered that by activating a specific gene, it is possible to transform the pancreas’s alpha cells into insulin-producing beta cells. These results, obtained in mice, are very promising and now need to be validated in humans. If confirmed, researchers would need to understand how to chemically induce and control this conversion of pancreatic cells. This discovery could then lead to a new avenue for treating Type 1 diabetes.
This discovery was ranked first in the “The Research” list of the ten most remarkable scientific discoveries in 2009
