Placed under a yellow “storm” watch this Wednesday, August 20, the Alpes-Maritimes are preparing for a rainy and windy episode. In Nice, several public sites are closed as a precaution.

The department of Alpes-Maritimes is placed under a yellow “storm” watch this Wednesday, August 20, by Mรฉtรฉo-France. Since 11 a.m., the city of Nice has closed all of its parks and gardens as well as the coastal path. This decision aims to reduce the risks associated with the impending weather.

According to Mรฉtรฉo-France, the coast could be affected by strong gusts, ranging from 60 to 80 km/h. The expected rainfall could locally reach 40 to 60 mm per hour, accompanied by hailstorms. These phenomena can cause quick damage and reduce visibility.

The municipality has indicated that all its municipal and metropolitan services are mobilized to face any eventuality.

The closure of green spaces and the coastal path is also intended to prevent accidents related to falling branches, landslides, or sudden water surges. Residents and tourists are urged to postpone their outdoor activities.

The storms are expected to move quickly in the afternoon, from the coast towards the hinterland. Mรฉtรฉo-France does not foresee a stationary nature but warns of significant accumulations in a short time, which could disrupt traffic and outdoor activities.

The episode remains limited in time. A lull is expected in the evening, although caution is advised until then. Authorities remind everyone to have accessible shelter in case of a sudden storm.

With the heatwave episode known by the department, this stormy episode will help cool the air density but could also cause significant damage depending on its intensity. This is due to the dry soil, which does not absorb water well at this time.
