Best time in the semi-finals, Charlotte Bonnet missed out on the podium by two hundredths in the 100m freestyle but achieved her personal best. During the evening, the swimmer from Nice secured two fourth places but broke two French records.
How frustrating. At first glance, disappointment naturally prevails when seeing a fourth place on the final score board. However, Charlotte Bonnet has no reason to be embarrassed by her performance. The gold and silver medals were far out of reach, claimed by the stars of the discipline (the Dutch swimmer Kromowidjojo and the Swedish Sjoström), but the French competitor had this podium within her grasp and legs.
A podium so close
Focusing on the time (51.65 seconds), one can lament the two tiny hundredths too many that denied the ONN swimmer a spot on a magnificent podium. Yet, this time is a new French record, the third in three days. It shows that the Nice native still has room for improvement.
A string of records
Two hours after the final of the main event, Charlotte Bonnet dove back in with her teammates for the 4x50m freestyle relay. At the start of this event, she clocked a time of 23.82 seconds, setting a new French record in the 50m freestyle. Marie Wattel kept France in podium contention, but the comeback by the Swedish and Danish teams put an end to podium hopes.
The leading figure in French swimming is already focused on her distance, the 200m freestyle, this Saturday (heats at 10:07 am, final at 5:57 pm) with the aim of bringing home an individual medal.
