Suffering from wrist pain for more than a year, the 28-year-old tennis player made the tough decision to undergo surgery. Her return is expected in several months.
It’s been almost a year since Fiona Ferro’s career took a turn. Last July 14, the French player, licensed at the Nice Lawn Tennis Club, lost her match against Jil Teichmann (Swiss, currently ranked 93rd in the world) during the qualifiers for the WTA 250 in Palermo. Since then, a long break followed by a return in February, not at the expected levelโฆ
Leaving to come back stronger?
In the early evening, the former No. 1 French player announced on her Instagram account that she had to “resolve to undergo surgery“: “I did my best to continue despite the pain, but I had to be realistic. Today, surgery seemed to be the only solution to give myself a real chance to play again without limitations, without compromise, and above all with the intensity needed to reach the level I aspire to.”
Fiona Ferro is now once again forced to step away from the courts for a long period. This is due to recurring physical issues. “I did everything to avoid it: physio, strengthening, injections, reducing training load, technical adjustmentsโฆ” she specifies.
Plummeting results
In February, Ferro returned to the circuit with the firm ambition of reclaiming a decent WTA ranking. But the Valbonne-based player never found the key in 2025: two early eliminations at the W50+ in Macon (vs. M. Bolkvadze; 6-3, 6-3) and W35 in Helsinki (vs. L. Miyazaki; 6-2, 6-3).
Things didn’t improve over the months. Three tournaments in France (Rouen, Saint-Malo, Paris); all ended in disappointment. In May, during the Roland-Garros qualifiers, joy was short-lived. After defeating Brazilian Laura Pigossi (6-2, 7-5), Fiona Ferro was defeated by Carole Monnet (7-5, 6-2).
Last June 17, it was the final straw. A loss to the world’s 578th ranked Sarah Iliev likely reinforced her decision that surgery was the only alternative to hope for a comeback on the court, this time without the looming threat of a wrist injury.
