Surprise announcement this Saturday. Alizé Cornet announced on Canal Plus Sport that she will end her career after her run at Roland-Garros.
After 20 years on the professional circuit, Alizé Cornet will hang up her racket after the Roland-Garros tournament. The announcement was made by the player herself in a report dedicated to her on Canal Plus Sport.
“I will play my last Roland-Garros in exactly one month, and I will retire right after. I’ve been thinking about it for a long time but announcing it officially gives me a bit of a feeling,” explained the former World No. 11. “It’s the result of a long process that lasted more than two years. I feel that it’s time. My ranking has dropped a bit, which allowed me to step back from my career. I want to decide on my exit. I feel I have a bit less to give in terms of desire. For me, it’s the right time to say goodbye to tennis.”
A news as expected as it is surprising. Indeed, the Niçoise is experiencing a difficult start to the 2024 season, partly due to a shoulder injury sustained during preparation this winter. Added to that is the fatigue that logically follows after all these years at the highest level, and there you have the decision made public. What might be surprising is the scheduled date for the end of her career (no later than June 9). Because the Olympic Games in France could have been the last challenge for the Niçoise, especially in doubles.
However, she will have the opportunity to conclude her career at her 69th consecutive Grand Slam at Roland-Garros thanks to the invitation she received. All this before dedicating herself a bit more to her activity as a novelist!
