After her victory yesterday, the Niçoise faced the German player Tamara Korpatsch in the quarter-finals of the WTA tournament in Prague. A tough match for Alizé Cornet, who lost in two sets (7-6/6-1) after two hours of play.
Alizé Cornet continued her week in Prague. After defeating the Estonian Kanepi in the round of 16, the Frenchwoman was back on the court today against the German Tamara Korpatsch, ranked 99th in the world and a qualifier. The two tennis players had faced each other only once before, in 2019 in Lausanne. Back then, Alizé Cornet easily won in two sets (6-4/6-3).
Right from the start of the match, both players showcased their power, especially in their serves. But Alizé Cornet managed to break first, leading 2-1 in the first set. The German took advantage of several backhand errors from Cornet to come back to 3-3. Gradually, Korpatsch took control of the match, winning four consecutive games and breaking again (5-3). With her back against the wall, the Niçoise caught up with her opponent at 5-5. The outcome of this first set was decided in a tie-break. On a final error, the Niçoise let this first set slip away 7-6(3) on the German’s first set point.
A physical match with many errors
The Niçoise seemed frustrated on the court. Alizé Cornet conceded another break, the third in this match, right at the start of the second set. Despite increasingly long rallies, the Niçoise clung on and immediately equalized at 1-1. But Korpatsch once again took the advantage in this match, with another break, finding herself leading 3-1. Visibly physically diminished, the Niçoise tried to hang on in this match. Her German opponent took the lead and won the second set easily 6-1, with a final forehand into the net by the Frenchwoman. Cornet lost after just under 2 hours of play. End of the road in Prague for the Niçoise.
