This Saturday, two players from the Côte d’Azur competed in a semi-final, one at the WTA Nottingham and the other at the ITF Biarritz W60. Alizé Cornet’s chances of reaching the final were short-lived after a quick defeat. On the other hand, Fiona Ferro can still hold on to hope.
Two French players, two tournaments, two semi-finals. The players from the Côte d’Azur, Fiona Ferro and Alizé Cornet, competed this afternoon in the first match of the final four of their competition. The first to take to the court was the Nice native, facing Jodie Burrage (24 years old, world No. 131), hoping to reach the final of the WTA Nottingham. Despite an impressive start, the world No. 72 stumbled and ended up losing the first set, 7 games to 5, in a closely contested match. The second set was also very eventful. At two games each, the opponents exchanged blow for blow, breaking each other’s serve until 5-5. The English player eventually prevailed once again, 7-5, confirming her current form by advancing to the tournament final (7-5/7-5).
Ferro in Trouble, But Not Without Resources
On the other side of the Channel, Fiona Ferro experienced a semi-final start as tight as in England. Facing Timea Babos (30 years old, world No. 207), the French player fought to reach the final of the ITF Biarritz. After an hour of play, she succumbed, like her compatriot, seven games to five against her opponent. The Hungarian started her second set very strongly by breaking serve right from the start. Despite her aggressiveness, the player from the Côte d’Azur managed to make a comeback at 3-2 by winning three consecutive games. Due to severe weather conditions, she was unable to capitalize on her strong phase, and the match was interrupted. Given the weather conditions, the confrontation will not resume this evening. Both players are expected on the court tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. if conditions permit.
