This symbolic milestone is merely the reflection of a project that has been ongoing since 2016 and was approved by the former president of the Alpes-Maritimes Departmental Council, Eric Ciotti. It is thus in line with the ultra-broadband plan implemented in 2013 by the Jean-Marc Ayrault government, amounting to 20 billion euros.
This deployment program has been distributed among various stakeholders, including the State, the region, the department, Europe, and the six EPCI (Public Establishments for Intercommunal Cooperation), all overseen by the mixed syndicate SICTIAM (Syndicate for Engineering for the Innovative Communities and Territories of the Alps and the Mediterranean).
Its president, Charles-Ange Ginésy, emphasized the ambitions regarding the deployment of fiber optics. “Despite the numerous challenges, fiber is now being deployed in the Alpes-Maritimes. We maintain our ambition of 4,000 km of fiber and 77,409 connections, and we uphold the goal of 100% fiber coverage in the department by 2023. An initial 88 million euros has been committed for the deployment of fiber in the 100 municipalities of the middle and upper Alpes-Maritimes regions, which are outside the intervention scope of private operators. The Alpes d’Azur Community of Communes contributed 1.6 million euros, and the Alpes-Maritimes Department contributed 14 million euros.”
To successfully carry out this project, the local authorities have decided to entrust the organization of the entire network’s construction to the operator Altitude Infrastructure, which will be its operator. Its subsidiary, Fibre 06, is responsible for the operation and distribution to private operators.
