Every year, at this time, a duty of remembrance is required and intertwined with sports.
Ten years ago, Nice basketball experienced a horrific tragedy during a traffic accident on the way back from a trip with the Nice Cavigal Olympic’s junior team. The young player, Laure Ecard, lost her life on the side of a highway, as did a bystander who had stopped to help. Other players were seriously injured.
All of the regional authorities have united with Laure’s parents, Sylvie and Jean, to organize an international tournament for the junior category in Laure’s name, in order to perpetuate, albeit ideally, her passion for this sport.
Yan Skakic, the president of the Union of Nice Basketball Societies, Philippe Manassero, Vice-President and active force since the first edition, Franรงoise Genovesi, General Secretary, and treasurer Joel Marteau are all channeling their energies to ensure the success of this heartfelt tournament.
This year, competing over the weekend to win the 9th edition of the “Laure ECARD” Challenge will be Spain, Italy, Greece, and France, the winners in 2010, 2016, and 2017.
