Evening Opening on Friday, June 2, from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM…

The Office of Tourism, Culture, and Entertainment of Fréjus, in collaboration with the Var General Council and Ambre International (www.ambre-international.com), is organizing a contemporary art exhibition featuring internationally renowned Var artist Michel HERGIBO at the Espace Paquebot of the Base Nature of Fréjus from May 25 to June 11, 2006.

The African Women

The title “The African Women” was chosen to highlight the very primitive aspect of the paintings, which are both symbolic representations and ritual objects. While these elements align with African art, “The African Women” are, however, of contemporary inspiration. Several subjects are addressed, linking the tool with various other themes, predominantly madness and insanity.

Between painting and installations, “The African Women” consists of about thirty monumental paintings on burlap or sackcloth, presented like tapestries.

The artistic approach is very direct, the gestural language immediate; the works are painted on strong, raw canvases enhanced by the accompaniment of unusual and significant accessories. Designed by the artist to integrate into the most unexpected sites, this is how they are conceived.

Nocturne on June 2 (7 PM-10 PM)

In a setting of lights and shadows, Michel HERGIBO will offer visitors a journey, a path through “The African Women”. The experience will not be a lecture but a speech with a poetic goal, pulling the audience into the secrets of “The African Women”: the titles, the artistic approach, the inspiration, the creative will of the painter, his psychological vision.

A new, unexpected, and contemporary exhibition venue

The encounter between the Paquebot and “The African Women” provokes a meaningful cultural shock. The Paquebot de Caquot thus becomes a real player in the exhibition and not just a simple presentation space.

The Espace Paquebot, an industrial wasteland, memory of the former Naval Air Base built by early 20th-century architectural figure Albert Caquot (1881-1976), is located at the Base Nature of Fréjus, by the sea.
