In response to the high cost of student life on the French Riviera, the AGORAé of Nice opened its doors for the 9th year. Developed by the Federation of General Student Associations (FAGE) in 2011, the project has been territorially supported by the Federation of Student Associations and Corporations of the Alpes-Maritimes (FACE 06) since 2012.
A project “for students, managed by students” aims to offer services and activities to students in need.
This solidarity grocery store, which is also a place for exchanges, debates, and associative services, provides access to a variety of quality products at -85% of market price.
To benefit from food aid, the student must fill out a questionnaire providing information about their financial situation, supported by a file consisting of supporting documents (identification, school certificate, proof of expenses and income). The AGORAé team welcomes students from Monday to Friday, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM to greet new beneficiaries and those wishing to hand-deliver their supporting documents.
Once the student’s file is compiled, the AGORAé team reviews it anonymously during a commission. The file is accepted if the student has a “Daily Disposable Income” of less than or equal to €7.60 (the equivalent of 2 university restaurant tickets). After the file is approved, the beneficiary student can come shopping and enjoy the monthly basket (between €10 and €22) allotted to them, according to their daily disposable income.
However, AGORAé must not create dependency; thus, the project’s coordinators use their energy to combat the exclusion and social isolation of beneficiaries. They are encouraged to think about their personal projects and attend various activities and workshops put in place, whether they be themed meals or group outings.
Beyond food shortages, most beneficiaries are in unacceptable living conditions. Therefore, it is not only necessary to accompany them but to take initiatives and ensure safety, to not remain passive in the face of urgent situations.
