An eight-week construction project began in early June at the Allianz Riviera. The objective: to transform the pitch of the Nice stadium to meet the demands of high-level sport while incorporating a sustainable approach. The resident club, OGC Nice, is involved in every step.
Since June 2, Allianz Riviera has launched a comprehensive renovation operation of its pitch. Much more than a simple grass replacement, this project aims for a complete technical transformation of the playing surface. Led by Nice Eco Stadium, operator of the venue, the project is part of a long-term performance strategy, closely coordinated with OGC Nice.
Over eight weeks, teams will work on an area of nearly 8,000 mยฒ. The old volcanic substrate is completely removed to make way for a two-layer sandy base. This new structure promotes drainage, stability, and efficient rooting.
The irrigation system is also being rethought. Twenty-four new generation sprinklers are being installed. The system will be partially supplied by rainwater collected on-site, with an estimated savings of 40,000 mยณ per year.
The last step involves installing a hybrid turf, a mix of synthetic fibers and natural grass. The “Lay & Play” solution allows for immediate use of the field.
Close coordination between experts and resident club
The summer period was chosen to carry out the work, so as not to interfere with OGC Nice’s competitions. In recent years, the stadium has hosted major events such as the Rugby World Cup and the Olympic Games. This left limited room for maneuver.
To ensure the quality of the result, Nice Eco Stadium turned to Andy Cole, a specialist recognized by FIFA. He oversees the project and ensures the connection between the various providers.
The Nice club is not left out. Scott Brooks, their turf consultant, has been involved in technical decisions from the start. He notably participated in the selection of grasses on the farm. โWe are fully satisfied with the work carried out in close collaboration with the teams from Nice Eco Stadium on this major pitch renovation project. […] The way we have worked together on this matter bodes well for future effective and constructive collaborations […] โ, emphasizes Fabrice Bocquet, CEO of OGC Nice.
The investment, amounting to 1.2 million euros, is entirely supported by Nice Eco Stadium. The pitch will be delivered at the end of July, in time for the club’s first European deadlines.
Patrick Florence, the operator’s CEO, summarizes the project’s objectives: โthis project will sustainably improve the pitch infrastructure, ensure very high-level performance, and meet the resilience requirements that a busy sports calendar demands.โ
The upcoming matches will thus be played on a new field, adapted for intensive use.
