In March 2025, accidents, serious injuries, and road deaths in the Alpes-Maritimes decreased compared to March 2024. Despite this decline, checks have been reinforced and preventive actions are planned.
In March 2025, the roads of Alpes-Maritimes witnessed fewer accidents than a year earlier. This is shown by the provisional data from the departmental road safety observatory. Three people lost their lives, compared to six in March 2024. There were also fewer serious injuries and fewer accidents.
The number of personal injury accidents amounted to 56 in March 2025, compared to 68 in March 2024. This represents a decrease of nearly 18%. Serious injuries are also down: 24 compared to 31 last year at the same period. The number of deceased persons dropped from six to three, representing a 50% decrease.
Since the beginning of the year, this trend is confirmed. From January 1st to March 31st, 2025, seven people lost their lives in road accidents in the department, compared to 14 over the same period in 2024.
Reinforced controls and a stricter regulation scale
The Prefect of Alpes-Maritimes has strengthened security measures. The number of driving license suspensions has increased significantly. In March 2025, 411 decisions were made, compared to 334 in March 2024. This tightening is explained by the revision of the suspension scale that took effect on February 1st, 2025. This revision no longer allows tolerance for probationary license holders.
Control operations conducted by law enforcement have uncovered many violations. Despite the declining figures, the Prefect urges users to “keep a high level of vigilance” and to “strictly adhere to basic safety rules.”
Alcohol, drugs, phone use while driving, and speeding remain major concerns. The prefecture reminds that in 2024, 55 people died on the department’s roads. There were 54 in 2023.
Detailed numbers show that pedestrians and motorcyclists remain particularly exposed. In March 2025, one person riding a motorcycle lost their life, compared to four a year earlier. One pedestrian also died, compared to two in March 2024.
Fatal accidents occurred in urban areas. No fatalities were recorded on highways or outside urban areas. The concerned days were Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The victims ranged from 18 years old to over 65 years old.
The time distribution indicates that two deaths occurred between 8 PM and 6 AM, and one between 12 PM and 8 PM. No fatal accidents were recorded between 6 AM and 12 PM.
Planned awareness actions
In addition to controls, several awareness actions are scheduled for April and May. They concern different audiences: young people, employees, motorcyclists, students, and road users in general.
Among the announced events: a day of awareness of road risks on April 25 at Parc Phoenix in Nice, in partnership with the city. On April 27 and 28, specific sessions for A2 license holders will be organized, with the National Gendarmerie and the 2RM06 association.
From May 12 to 16, a week will be dedicated to workplace road safety. Other actions will take place in schools, with mutual insurance companies, or foundations. They aim to strengthen prevention and remind people of the appropriate behaviors to adopt on the road.
The prefecture provides comprehensive accident data on its website. The next report will help determine if the current trend continues in the upcoming months.
