To date, “nearly 1000 Ukrainians” have been received at the House for Victim Reception in Nice, where they are offered a housing solution.
“But while 40% of those fleeing Ukraine by car arrive in France through the Turbie toll and we are the first department in France to welcome refugees, it is clear that we, like the prefecture, are overwhelmed by the flow of refugees,” declared Christian Estrosi in a statement.
The former LR mayor of Nice is therefore calling for “the solidarity of everyone in the department where reception is not organized by all intercommunalities, in the region, and even in other departments.”
The Alpes-Maritimes prefecture confirms having observed “a significant influx of refugees” for a week, with “500 to 800 people transiting daily through the Turbie toll, some staying in the Alpes-Maritimes, others heading to Spain or Portugal.”
Before the conflict, the Alpes-Maritimes department, home to a significant Ukrainian community, had 995 Ukrainians with residence permits, according to figures from the prefecture.
