The Cimiez Arena in Nice closes its doors for new archaeological excavations until March 2024.
As in Christian Estrosi’s 2022 project, the ancient amphitheater, whose unrestricted access had been prohibited to the public in recent months, will be subject to additional archaeological excavations in 2024. The Cimiez Arena was built in 70-80 AD, under the reign of emperors Julius Sabinus and Titus.
Once a theater and particularly a venue for musical performances during the jazz festival, this remarkable site unfortunately suffered significant damage, which led to the decision to close it.
Today, the city is committed to ensuring its preservation. It will soon undergo an archaeological study campaign consisting mainly of topographic and photogrammetric surveys (involving measurements obtained from multiple images from different viewpoints) over a 2,800 mยฒ area.
However, it will still be possible to enjoy its splendor during the theater seasons that will be organized from June to October. During this conservation phase, antiquities enthusiasts can still access the archaeological museum and the ancient thermal baths.
