The Azorean economy at a standstill

Latest News

The Azurean economy is struggling! The combined figures for tourism and unemployment testify to this. Moreover, the explanation is simple: No growth, no jobs.

In an area where the climate is a primary resource, a gloomy summer is enough for the economic engine to seize up.

And if you add stagnation or a decrease in purchasing power… the die is cast, nothing goes right…

At the national level, unemployment in July increased by 4.3% compared to 2013, but in the Alpes-Maritimes, the situation is even worse: 66,325 job seekers, an increase of +7.5%.

A “dreary” summer tourist season with a decrease of 3% (for hotels) to 7% (for campsites) in July compared to summer 2013. However, August’s attendance is expected to be the same as August 2013.

Hopes are in place for September, which is expected to be satisfactory “with 69% of professionals optimistic (72% in 2013),” according to the CRT.

It is a fact that the Azurean economy, focused on tourism and services, feels the cyclical trend more than others. Furthermore, there is increased international competition and, frankly, a difficulty in shifting the offering to more lucrative customer segments.

There is work in prospect if we want to change the situation, but above all, there is a real need for innovative ideas.

Simply waiting for the crisis to pass is no longer sufficient.
