“Marco Polo,” a new production by Ballet Nice Méditerranée, will be presented to the Nice public at the Théâtre de Verdure on Friday, July 16, and Saturday, July 17, at 9:30 PM. With choreography by Luciano Cannito, music by Marco Schiavoni, and set designs, costumes, and lighting by Jean-Pierre Laporte, this ballet is freely inspired by the “Invisible Cities” by writer Italo Calvino. Through an imaginary face-off between the explorer and Emperor Khan, the ballet offers a fascinating confrontation between East and West. Structured like the novel, the ballet illustrates the fantastical descriptions Marco Polo makes of these cities invented by Italo Calvino. Each of these imaginary cities is characterized by a theme (City memory, city desire, city gaze, etc.) and is personified by a female figure.
