The 2005 and 2006 editions of CANCAYAK, a nautical rally organized by the Nice Côte d’Azur Urban Community, were a great success. Year after year, athletes have responded in large numbers to the call of the sea (300 competitors in 2006) and have highly praised this sporting event, which offers a particular challenge and atmosphere, especially due to the exceptional quality of the site.
Exploring the Azurean coast from Saint-Laurent du Var to Cap d’Ail, this nautical excursion combines the pleasure of discovery with the enjoyment of sports and leisure activities. The local population, services of various municipalities of the CANCA, sports associations, and regular French or foreign practitioners of these disciplines are brought together in this unifying event.
This two-day event consists of:
– A 17 km route on Saturday: Saint Laurent du Var / Villefranche-sur-Mer.
– A 20 km route on Sunday: Villefranche-sur-Mer / Cap d’Ail / Beaulieu-sur-Mer.
– An alternative shorter route of 17 km on Sunday: Villefranche-sur-Mer / Pointe Cabuel / Beaulieu-sur-Mer.
Rankings are established at the end of each stage, as well as an overall ranking for the two days: categories for men, women, short and long routes.
The Nautical Rally
Aside from the competition, on the same or a shorter route, participants who prefer landscapes over the stopwatch are also welcome and can mingle with the competitors. To allow novices to join the event, crews of canoes will be led by experienced helmsmen.
Last year, 20 canoes made up of teams from elected officials and various services of the CANCA and its municipalities competed over the two days.
Sponsored this year by Emilie Fer, World Champion 2006, the nautical rally of the Urban Community aims to become equivalent to prestigious events such as the Ardèche marathon or Venice’s Vogalonga.
