The ballet season ends at the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa with Carmen; a visionary choreography by director and choreographer Amedeo Amodio, one of the most innovative artists in Italy over the last 30 years and an excellent interpreter of the entire classical and modern ballet repertoire.
The collaboration with director Liliana Cavani was memorable, Mr. Amodio and Mr. Robert Pomper created two dance interludes in the films Portier de Nuit and Beyond Good and Evil.
In 1979, Mr. Amodio was one of the founders and the first Artistic Director of Aterballetto for 17 years.
Inspired by Prosper Mรฉrimรฉe’s homonymous novella (1845), the Opera was conceived with notable modifications, among others the introduction of certain characters like Escamillo, Micaela, and Don Josรฉ.
The libretto was written in collaboration with composer Georges Bizet, who is also the author of the text for the famous habanera “L’amour est un oiseau rebelle.”
The ballet staged at Carlo Felice fully respected the rhythm of the score and the originality of the Opera’s libretto: the musical adaptations by Mr. Giuseppe Calรฌ capture the exaltation and liveliness of the most moving musical moments written by Mr. Bizet. Among others, special mention must be made of one of the love duets between Josรฉ and Carmen supported by the gentle melodies of cellist Riccardo Agosti, one of the most appreciated in Italy.
Heroine and Saint at the same time, Mr. Amodio’s Carmen fascinates because she is a unique woman, especially in Bizet’s era: a gypsy on the fringes of society, of legality, ravishing and passionate. Her charm derives from her vital elan, free and irreverent towards the authorities she does not hesitate to mock.
The sets and costumes by Ms. Luisa Spinatelli are very appropriate, perfectly adapting to the performers: a superb and seductive Carmen (Ms. Alice Firenze), the moving Josรฉ (Amilcar Moret), the sculptural toreador Escamillo (Mr. Marco Lo Presti), the elegant and innocent Micaela (Ms. Ilaria Grisanti), the stern officer (Mr. Valerio Polverari).
The dancers from Daniele Cipriani Entertainment exhibit great technique and personality.
