The CASTELLION Circle is organizing a conference on the theme “Symbolism in the Work of CHAGALL” which will take place on Wednesday, April 25, 2012, at 8:00 PM at the MAMAC Auditorium (Promenade des Arts โ Place Yves Klein).
Ms. Elisabeth PACOUD-REME will replace the initial speaker, Mr. Jean-Michel FORAY, Former Director of the National Museums of the Alpes-Maritimes, who is currently hospitalized. Ms. Elisabeth PACOUD-REME, an Art Historian, is in charge of collections at the National Museum Marc Chagall Biblical Message in NICE.
Marc Chagall, a popular artist whose work is warmly received in all countries worldwide, uses a complex symbolic, allegorical, or metaphorical language in his paintings, where the overlapping of meanings further refines interpretations. Indeed, there is a blend of allusions to the world of his Jewish and Russian youth, biblical sources, and references to art history.
Deciphering this approach through some of his characteristic works allows for a better understanding of how the artist finds a unique place within the 20th-century art movements, between the ambition for universality and faithfulness to his roots, between modernity and expression of faith.
