French painter and engraver Pierre Soulages is being honored at the Lympia gallery until April 19. To celebrate the artist’s 100th anniversary, 72 works are on display, including 15 paintings that have never been shown to the public.
In this exhibition dedicated to Pierre Soulages at the Lympia space, the journey is intended to be both chronological and educational. It’s about unraveling the mysteries of the creator of the famous Outrenoir, whose adventure began in 1979.
The collection presented in the exhibition, curated by Gรฉrard Bosio, consists of works from public collections (Soulages and Fenaille museums, PACA Regional Fund for Contemporary Art, MAMAC) and private collections. About fifteen works are previously unseen. The public will thus be able to discover Peinture 202 x 143, 17.06.2008, Bronze III (there are only twelve bronzes by Pierre Soulages), and even a menhir statue dear to the artist, an archaeological piece leaving the rooms of the Musรฉe Fenaille (Rodez) for the first time.
A hundred of the artist’s works have been selected to be part of a journey aimed at showcasing the entire body of Pierre Soulages’ work, from a chronological viewpoint (from 1946 to 2008) to trace his evolution, and from a technical viewpoint (painting, bronze, lithography, screen printing, etching) to highlight his diversity. This exhibition will also spotlight his encounters with Pablo Picasso, Hans Hartung, and Jean-Michel Atlan, not to mention Lรฉopold Sรฉdar Senghor, with whom he developed a spiritual affinity.
