After more than a year of work, the renovation of the Notre-Dame-du-Port church is complete.
The restoration of the Notre-Dame-du-Port church was officially inaugurated last Thursday following renovation work that lasted nearly a year and a half. This renovation project ultimately doubled its initial budget and required an investment of 1.9 million euros. The Architect of the Buildings of France as well as the Ministry of Culture closely monitored this rehabilitation.
A historic cradle of Nice
During the inauguration, the mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi, emphasized the historical importance of the Notre-Dame-du-Port church. According to him, “Nice is an addition of neighborhoods”. He highlighted that this place is the cradle of the city. Despite the evolution of the area over the years, particularly with the arrival of the tramway, the Notre-Dame-du-Port church remains frozen in time. It has now regained its original ochre yellow color, in accordance with the directives of the regional directorate of cultural affairs, much to the delight of the neighborhood’s residents.
Upcoming work inside the churchย
The church, built from 1840 to 1853, will require a renovation of its interior architecture. This work is eagerly anticipated by Father Bottin. A second inauguration is already on the horizon for the church. Indeed, the next phase of work will focus on the interior of the building. Preparatory studies for this second phase were already initiated at the end of 2022 and are expected to be completed by the end of 2023.
