The films were made in black and white super8 on the principle of “shot-edited.” The objective of this operation is to encourage local creation through the use of an original format in a light and economical setup.
The principle of the collection was proposed to filmmakers in the region. Each selected director received a roll of black and white super8 film intended for the production of a short film on the proposed theme Insomnia. A photograph, taken by Antoine Banni, had to be integrated into the film.
The association covered the purchase of the film and its processing, as well as a contribution to the administrative costs amounting to €150. It provided its own resources for the shooting.
The premiere of the films in the Insomnia collection will take place during the 10th Cinema and Video Encounters in Nice, which will be held from October 23 to 28, 2008. The event will be held at the Théâtre Trimages during a night dedicated to super8 on Saturday, October 25, 2008, at 8:30 PM.
Filmmakers Antoine Banni, Xavier Ladjointe, Alexandre Modica, Nicolas Deliau, Philippe Frey, Elisabeth Vissio, Sebastien Antoine, Nathalie Portas, Nicolas Clair, and Yim Tsang from Villa Arson will be present to discover their works.
Six films were proposed to the Short Film Workshop of Caen to establish a partnership, stimulate exchanges between associations, and expand broadcasting possibilities. These six films will also be screened in the presence of the head of the Norman association, Romuald Poretti.
Nice Premium: So Vincent, do you like your 10 years?
Vincent Jourdan: It’s hard to answer before the end of the celebration. But if I look back at the work accomplished since 1999, the good times and fascinating encounters far outweigh the small issues inherent in this kind of activity. There is the pride, as a movie lover, of having shown so many films that are so hard to see. Above all, there is the pleasure of having seen the evolution of authors whose first work we showcased and who are still here today, having built a body of work, even if modest. I think of Aurélia Barbet, Cédric Romain, Xavier Ladjointe, or Stéphane Coda. I hope I will love the 10th.
NP: A preview of this weekend that will obviously be too short?
VJ: I think we’ve put the maximum into this weekend: screenings from 2:00 PM at Théâtre Trimages, a round table at 4:00 PM with blogger and film enthusiast friends, Africa and music with Jérémie Lenoir’s new film, a night dedicated to super8 with the presentation of the “Insomnia” collection we produced, an all-nighter with short films and two cult Asian films (“When the Embryo Goes Poaching” and “The Iron Hand”), two or three hours of sleep, then a Sunday afternoon dedicated to video and experimental art and an engaging evening with “The Dirty Plate” by Denys Piningre in partnership with ADN.
Phew. And it’s not over; there will be more screenings on Monday and Tuesday with the closing and the visit of Paul Vecchiali to present “En haut des marches” at the Mercury. Long and beautiful days ahead.
NP: So, Vincent runs and runs, but towards what?
VJ: “Hurry slowly,” the poet said. Beyond the Encounters, there is the will to stimulate local creation. Our objective is to resonate the voice for the authors. By showing what exists, we try to send the message: “Help us, help them to do more and better.” Another ten years will certainly be needed!
NP: Every year for short films, isn’t it too long?
VJ: But there are also our friends from Héliotrope with their festival in April. We have set up regular screenings over an evening at the Volume and with Opéra Plage, but it’s work and especially resources that are not always sufficient to periodically establish the local creation, short or long, in the Nice landscape. It’s a long-haul job.
NP: Finally, what are your wishes for this tenth anniversary?
VJ: That the public comes in large numbers! And that they are happy to have come.
