In France, several million deaf and hard of hearing people do not go to the cinema due to a lack of equipped theaters and subtitled films. This audience is thus excluded from one of the essential parts of cultural heritage: cinema.
As part of the policy of integrating disabled people and in order to facilitate access to culture for all audiences, the cinematheque of the city of Nice has just equipped itself with an electronic subtitler.
This equipment offers people with hearing impairments the ability to access cinematic productions and fulfill their passion for the 7th art.
Subtitling adds numerous additional pieces of information to the dialogues:
Who is speaking, what noise makes the protagonists react, what music accompanies the action…
