Concerned about not penalizing any resident of the city of Nice who needs to park their vehicle and also aiming to comply as best as possible with the established curfew, the city of Nice has decided to offer free on-street parking. This decision applies every evening from 6 PM, the starting time of the curfew. The measures intended for Nice aim to improve traffic flow and also to increase vehicle rotation, allowing businesses to boost their commercial attractiveness.
During peak hours, 20% of traffic involves vehicles desperately searching for a parking spot, often in vain. This new measure is beneficial for the environment. Saving time in the search for a spot provides a more pleasant living environment as well as better air quality.
More than 10,500 parking spaces affected by on-street parking
Free throughout the day during the lockdown, on-street parking has been paid again since this Wednesday, January 20th. Motorists now have to pay for parking either by purchasing a ticket or through the “paybyphone” app between 9 AM and 6 PM. The city of Nice has more than 10,500 paid parking spaces available across 14 geographical areas of the city, with over 560 parking meters. Daytime paid parking also encourages the population to reinvest in the city center with the assurance of finding a spot more quickly, along with 30 minutes free. The objective is economic.
Buying a loaf of bread, picking up your child from school, withdrawing money— the new on-street parking policy encourages these actions, whether they are daily or occasional. The advantages of paid parking are numerous: increased availability of parking spaces, smoother traffic flow (reduction in double parking), and greater city safety thanks to the work of municipal police officers.
