This Thursday, August 14, the city of Nice paid tribute to Catherine Ségurane. An annual ceremony in honor of a symbolic figure from Nice.
A gathering took place on Sincaire Street, in front of the stele of the Nice heroine, Catherine Ségurane, this Thursday evening. A civil ceremony was held initially. The committee of Niçoise Traditions was present to enliven this event. Passers-by could admire the traditional dances, songs, and costumes.
Christian Estrosi: “Ségurane was neither a soldier nor a leader, but a woman”
During this tribute, several notable figures were present. The mayor of the city, Christian Estrosi, the opposition member, Phillipe Vardon, as well as the bishop, Monseigneur Jean-Philippe Nault. A minute of silence was observed, followed by the traditional Nissa la Bella.
Christian Estrosi spoke for a moment. “Nice is a city with a future, that wants to preserve what the oldest have left it as a legacy.” Catherine Ségurane is part of the history of Nice, yet she was not destined for it. “Ségurane was neither a soldier nor a leader, but a woman,” the mayor of Nice emphasized. Indeed, the one who became a heroine of the city was a laundress.
A Marian procession to the Notre-Dame du Port church
To continue this ceremony, a torchlit Marian procession took place in the streets of Old Nice. A gathering occurred at Place Garibaldi before heading to the Notre-Dame du Port church.
To conclude this celebration, a salute within the Blessed Sacrament took place in the church, presided over by Monseigneur Jean-Philippe Nault. Many faithful were present in attendance, the day before August 15, the Feast of the Assumption.
