On the anniversary of the cease-fire proclaimed on March 19, 1962, in Algeria, a national day of remembrance and reflection in memory of the civilian and military dead of the Algerian War and the conflicts in Morocco and Tunisia from 1952 to 1962, a commemorative ceremony took place at the Monument to the Dead in Nice in the presence of civil authorities (the Deputy Prefect, Madame Sylvie Cendre, represented the State), military personnel, and veteran associations.
A small crowd of protesters had gathered on the opposite quay.
As stated in the prefecture’s communiqué, “individuals were shouting and hurling insults. This deplorable behavior dishonors those who engaged in it. It calls for nothing but contempt from the State’s representative.”
The following comes from Patrick Allemand, who represented the PACA Region and laid a wreath amidst insults of “bastard,” “scum,” and especially “collaborator” and “PS collaborator.”
The elected official recognized among them Hubert De Mesmay, regional councilor of the National Front, who insulted him and made him the target of abundant abuse from his supporters.
Patrick Allemand condemns this behavior and intends to take action: “Beyond myself, it is all the victims of the conflicts related to the decolonization in North Africa, both civilian and military, as well as their relatives, that these individuals have insulted. This is why I have filed a complaint for public insults.”
Fortunately, they call themselves (among themselves) patriots!
