After the inauguration on December 14th of the section leading to the airport, Christian Estrosi invited the people of Nice yesterday afternoon to check the progress of the tramway construction at the other end of the city, in the Port district.
Tramway line 2 will have 20 stations extending over a total of 11.3 km. The average travel time from port to airport will be 26 minutes. Nearly 210,000 people and jobs will be served.
This Monday, we were able to visit the Port construction site to take stock. The visit took place at the corner of Emmanuel Philibert and Antoine Gautier streets, where the ongoing works will connect the former tunnel boring machine entry shaft to Cassini quay.

Construction of foundations with diaphragm walls, cover slab, and mole excavation as well as the construction of the concrete base, all major stages of the work were detailed by the architect in charge of the works. “These developments will add value to this area. We will not build housing, but 3 to 4-star hotels; this is a choice made in consultation with the local merchants to promote the establishment of a clientele with purchasing power and added value.” said Christian Estrosi.
For residents, the works causing significant disruptions led to the strengthening of local communication and the technical team. “In some areas, relocation proposals have been made for those affected” added the Mayor of Nice.
The works generating the most disturbances will end at the end of January at the top of Gautier street, and the beginning of March at the technical premises. Roadworks will begin at the end of spring 2019.
“We want these neighborhoods to upgrade, with real estate gaining value. As soon as the tramway becomes operational, we will launch a major communication campaign aimed at the district to bring back a clientele by supporting the economic and social cohesion of the area to revive activities.” specified Christian Estrosi.
Regarding the Quai du Port with Place de l’Ile de Beauté “we will deliver arrangements without harming the existing vegetation, restoring all its former glory to this place.” According to the Municipality, Nice is expected to undergo considerable changes in the coming years.

Furthermore, the construction site has been adapted to allow for the holding of Paris-Nice 2019 and the Port Festival. Merchants will benefit from fence decorations, the establishment of two parking lanes on Cassini street, and a concierge service for deliveries.
