Eureka! We can start the countdown for the launch of Tramway Line 2: yesterday, during the visit to the maintenance center construction site, it was Christian Estrosi who announced the inauguration trip (Cadam-Magnan) scheduled for June 30th.
After so many inaugurations, we will finally reach the use of this very useful, even indispensable, transport method considering the mobility situation in the Riviera capital, which is now comparable to a Middle Eastern city.
And if we imagine an increase in traffic with the development of real estate operations in the Var plain and the future Exhibition Center, it is clear that an emergency situation is not far off.
Yesterday during the visit to the construction site of additional structures
The inauguration of the additional structures, the storage workshop with a capacity for 52 trams (compared to the 37 that will be put into service) and the park-and-ride facility (6 floors, 630 spaces), is scheduled for January 29th.
“This maintenance center will meet the maintenance and operational needs of the future tramway lines outlined in the transport master plan: the West-East line as well as Line 3 and the line that will eventually serve the west,” commented the visibly satisfied Mayor of Nice.
He also confirmed the timeline for other sections of the line, which will be completed by the end of 2019, including the extension to Saint-Isidore (Line 3), with an expected ridership of 140,000 passengers per day, 20,000 cars on the Promenade des Anglais axis, and 1,600 fewer bus connections.
If these forecast figures are confirmed, it is enough to brighten one’s spirits!
The two structures will change the landscape of the area behind the Nikaia, Charles Erhmann Stadium, and the Sports Hall, with their imposing silhouette and architectural style (wood cladding for the park-and-ride facility, green roof for the maintenance workshop) establishing themselves as a visual element in a district that remains unfinished.

If Christian Estrosi wanted to emphasize that this is the largest investment ever made in Nice (the budget plans for over 700 million euros, but the final account will reveal the truth!), his two guests, Charles-Ange Ginรฉsy and Renaud Muselier, were eager to highlight their financial contributions: 87 million from the Departmental Council (“The Department is doing its part to develop a modern, efficient transportation network that closely meets the population’s needs,” said its president) and nearly 40 million from the regional authority (“To be attractive, a territory must be accessible! With @cestrosi we are working to develop the #transport offer in @regionpaca, particularly public transport. They will enable us to become the 1st #Region in #France to comply with #COP21 agreements #Nice,” tweeted Renaud Muselier).
Finally, on this occasion, it was revealed that the maintenance center would be named in memory of Charles Ginรฉsy. It will complement the departmental archive building, which also bears the name of the former President of the General Council at that time.
