Thursday, December 23, 2010, at 5 PM at the Tour Bellanda – Nice
Exhibition from December 20, 2010, to January 7, 2011 (except weekends) from 10 AM to 12 PM and from 2 PM to 5 PM, free entry.
Must-see novelty: this year Christmas is also showcased at the Tour Bellanda!
This exhibition is organized in partnership between the Historical Heritage, Language, and Culture Delegation from the City of Nice and the French Association of Friends of the Crèche, which works to preserve and maintain old crèches to pass them on to future generations.
Through this exhibition, the public will be able to discover or rediscover an art that has become popular. It originated in the 16th century and has developed over time.
Starting from the early 19th century, crèches began appearing in homes thanks to the “invention” of the clay santon in Provence. Since then, many artists, both professional and amateur “santonniers,” have continued and renewed the naïve figurines that decorate the crèche, representing in particular the artisanal trades.
The tradition of the crèche is not limited to the borders of Provence and the County of Nice; it is now a universal theme.
