On the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the Matisse Museum, established on the heights of Cimiez since 1963, the City of Nice will present an exceptional program of 8 exhibitions in its museums from June 20 to autumn 2013. All of them will relate to the figure, the work, and the legacy of Henri Matisse, who developed an essential part of his work in Nice and on the Cรดte d’Azur.
This program will be presented under the title “Nice 2013. A Summer for Matisse.” The general curatorship of this event has been entrusted to Jean-Jacques Aillagon.
Christian Estrosi, Deputy Mayor of Nice and President of the Metropolis, states: “Through this initiative, I wanted to express the City of Nice’s recognition towards Henri Matisse and his heirs. Their generosity first enabled the creation of the Matisse Museum, and then its development and the enrichment of its collections. I also wish to demonstrate the importance I attach to my cityโs museums and the role they play in its cultural influence.”
The details of this cultural program will be presented next February.
