It feels like the France of the Yellow Vests is a country on the brink of the abyss, that the Republic is ready to topple, that power is up for grabs, or even to be picked up.
Far from it. Amidst the vociferations of some — Mélenchon being a leading figure in this genre — the mild condemnations of violence by others — Wauquiez, despite being “republican” — the attacks by Marine Le Pen straddling a line often similar to that of the Insoumis (or vice versa), and the inaudible barbs of the ghostly socialists.
They certainly have no hold over this revolt, but it seems they are banking on noise, fury, and chaos.
Beware, for in this dangerous game, history, and the example of many countries in Europe and elsewhere, shows that the winner is most likely to be the far right.
