The Baroque Ensemble of Nice returns for its December concert.
After Friday’s performance, this Sunday at 4:30 PM at the Chapel of the Holy Shroud in Old Nice, the ensemble featuring Gilbert Bezzina on violin, Daniele Bovo on cello, Vera Elliott on harpsichord, and Sergio Basilico on theorbo will perform a program of Sonate da chiesa by composer Arcangelo Corelli: Sonata a Violino e Violone e Cembalo Op. V and Sonatas 1 to 6.
Arcangelo CORELLI (1653-1713) left us with a small but significant body of work. In Rome, where he spent almost his entire life, he attracted many composers who admired the violinist, conductor, and composer (such as Couperin, Handel, or Muffat).
He established a violin school that spread throughout Europe, where he trained the greatest violinists of his time, like Geminiani, Locatelli, and Gasparini.
The sonatas of Opus V, published in 1700 and republished 42 times during the 18th century, perfected the sonata form, which served as a model for generations of composers.
Gilbert Bezzina, using the Estienne Roger edition which restores Corelli’s presumed ornamentations, pays tribute to a composer who has always been a part of his research into the baroque violin.
