Master Jean-Paul Barety, Former Deputy Mayor of Nice, President of the Acadèmia Nissarda, handed over the photographic collections of Joseph Dognibene and Vincent Gargano to the departmental Archives.

As early as 1898, several notable and knowledgeable people from Nice gathered around Dr. Alexandre Barety, including notably Henri Sappia, the creator of the Nice Historique magazine in 1898. This group officially became the Acadèmia Nissarda on May 19, 1904. Its ambition is the defense of local dialects and traditions, the preservation of artistic riches, and historical research.

The association wanted to contribute to the mission of collecting, enriching, and preserving old documents in the Archives by entrusting them with valuable collections from Nice photographers, Joseph Dognibene and Vincent Gargano, who managed to capture with their period equipment images of great aesthetic quality of our territory, its public life, and the population between 1930 and 1970.

The Joseph Dognibene collection contains nearly 4,000 images. It consists of personal photographic albums of his travels and views of the department, rare prints of political gatherings under the Vichy regime, and negatives published in the local press.

The Vincent Gargano collection is estimated at 8,000 images, bringing together negatives published in the press and a large number of photographs of political and artistic personalities passing through Nice, but also of Nice locals in their daily lives (sporting events, local festivals…).
