The European Union has 80 million poor people (16% of its population).
The inability of the 27 agriculture ministers to find a compromise for the continuation of the “European Food Aid Programme for the Most Deprived” (PEAD) is distressing.
It is even more so because it follows the lack of decision on the aid plan for Greece examined on September 16 and 17 in Wroclaw during the meeting of the economic and finance ministers of the member states.
European governments seem paralyzed by the magnitude of the economic, financial, and social crisis currently facing the European Union.
Rumors are circulating about the possibility of early elections in Greece or about organizing a referendum asking the Greeks whether they want to leave the euro or not!
If these rumors are true, it represents a complete abdication of responsibility by the Greek political class, not only towards its citizens but also towards the 17 member states of the eurozone that are assisting it.
The rise of populists and extreme movements in Europe can only be strengthened by this “pyromaniac Europe” that itself fuels eurosceptic tendencies!
To participate in the fight against these destructive forces spreading across Europe, the European Movement-France is organizing its autumn university on October 22 and 23 in Dijon, precisely on the theme of “solidarity: a driving force for the European Union?”
It is high time for Europeans to mobilize and fight to consolidate the venture that binds us all and has managed to bring prosperity and development to Europe.
The European Movement-France calls on the French government to continue its efforts to find a lasting solution both to the financial and budgetary crisis in which Europe is struggling and to ensure the continuation of the “European Food Aid Programme for the Most Deprived.”
The European Movement-France will challenge all candidates in the 2012 presidential election on France’s place in Europe and their proposals to strengthen European integration.
