The European Parliament debated last Wednesday a draft resolution calling on the Commission to “use all instruments” at its disposal to uphold the fundamental rights of LGBT people.
A symbolic resolution was voted on, proclaiming the European Union a “freedom zone” for LGBT people.
European Commissioner for Equality, Helena Dalli, expressed her “support” for this initiative. She emphasized that “in several EU countries, LGBTIQ people (lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgender, intersex, and queer) face increasing attacks from political leaders, religious figures, and other public figures.”
“The EU must be a freedom zone for all of us, without exception,” she said.
