The Europétanque 2016 will therefore not take place, and the organization is launching a solidarity initiative by proposing to distribute the registration fees to families affected by this tragedy.
The organizing committee confirmed yesterday the cancellation of the Europétanque in Nice: “Due to the deadly attack that has cruelly affected the City of Nice and out of respect for the victims and their loved ones, the President and all the leaders of the Europétanque have decided to cancel the event in consultation with the President of the Alpes-Maritimes department and the Mayor of the City of Nice. This attack was perpetrated on the Promenade des Anglais, an emblematic venue for the Europétanque…”
A decision that was not easy to make, but it led the organizing team to another brilliant idea, as it was proposed to the registered teams to transform their registration fees into a donation in support of the victims of last July 14th’s attack. A dignified and supportive gesture, as can be found in the world of pétanque.
An email was sent out yesterday to all registrants to request permission to use these amounts (€19 per registered triplette). Otherwise, they would be refunded upon simple request from the registered team.
A beautiful initiative and a noble gesture from the Europétanque organization and its departmental committee, which once again show that solidarity and fraternity are not just empty words in the world of Nice-area pétanque.
