The Exhibition “Goal! European Encounter” at the National Sports Museum

Latest News

As the UEFA Euro 2016™ approaches, the National Museum of Sport is getting ahead of the game and presenting its upcoming temporary exhibition, which will be unveiled to the public on March 31st.

On an area of more than 800 m², the exhibition “Gooal! European Rendezvous” is indeed an invitation to enter a grand celebration of European football, a world where the visitor can immerse themselves, be guided, but also actively participate in the discovery of the origins, context, players, legendary matches, and spirit of the European Nations Championship.

To achieve this, the museum will rely, as always, on its immense collections, amassed over more than 50 years and consisting of nearly 45,000 items and 400,000 documents, but also on the contributions from the UEFA multimedia collections and archives, the organizer of the competition since 1960, and the French Football Federation.

Finally, as in its permanent galleries, the museum will take on the challenge of linking art and sport through numerous paintings, lithographs, posters, and sculptures that will adorn the exhibition path.

The famous representations of footballers by Nicolas de Staël (1952) and Niki de Saint Phalle (1993), loaned to the museum for the duration of this exhibition, are perfect examples.

To ensure the extension of this project, the museum’s ambition is to expand beyond its walls, notably through:

A “showcase stand” of the exhibition, with an area of 100 m², which will be positioned in the Fan Zone of Nice during the competition. Daily shuttles will transport visitors to the museum from the city center.

The management of a significant collection of fan objects, carried out in partnership with the Ministry of Culture and Communication and 10 museums located in the host cities of UEFA Euro 2016™.

Moreover, the museum wishes to make the exhibition’s message accessible beyond the Nice area and thus offers devices aimed at being deployed throughout the territory:

Ready-to-use traveling panel exhibitions replicating the concept and message of the exhibition presented at the museum.

Educational tools enabling teachers and activity leaders to build cross-cutting projects around the event, within educational institutions or leisure centers.

A 20-page booklet designed for children aged 8 to 15.
