The Léa’s Ocean exhibition, at the Congress Center at the port of Nice, is once again open until September 14. Created by self-taught sculptor Junior Fritz Jacquet, its creations were made from paper, without glue or scissors, in connection with the Year of the Sea.

Open for less than a week, the Léa’s Ocean exhibition is presented by the artist Junior Fritz Jacquet, who was named a master in origami in 2004. Within the exhibition, 1500 m² are dedicated to his works. The aim, according to city officials, is to introduce visitors to paper sculptures, in connection with the Year of the Sea.

Born in Haiti in 1979, the self-taught artist showcases life-size creations at the Congress Center. There, you will find manta rays, Posidonia algae, jellyfish, and underwater caves.

I wanted to raise awareness about the fragility of the marine ecosystem. After all, it is the lung of our planet. Today, I wanted to have an approach that touches everyone,” summarizes the paper sculptor.

Some Key Facts About the Author

The Léa’s Ocean exhibition is dedicated to the daughter of Junior Fritz Jacquet. His techniques involve crumpling papers with water. The choice is motivated by its flexibility, lightness, low cost, and easy accessibility.

With 17 people, the master in origami spent more than a year and a half constructing structures with 10 tons of paper salvaged from factories. According to the author, the length of the cables varies from 200 to 300 km. To create the pieces, 200 to 300 spools of thread are used for all the structures.

Diagnosed with dyslexia, Junior Fritz Jacquet discovered origami at seven years old. His work has been awarded several times. In 2016, he was named a godfather of the Foujita Foundation. Later, from 2021 to 2022, he founded his training Origami Folds and Creations. Its purpose is to share his knowledge through educational projects aimed at the public.

Léa’s Ocean is accessible from Sunday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Examples of paper crumpling are presented at the entrance of the cultural venue. Included are baking parchment, parallel crumpling, or radiant crumpling. Photo: Théo Cireddu
