The photographer Jean Gilletta

Jean Gilletta, a symbol of landscape photographers from the southeast of France, is best known for his photos, but also for his photography publishing company founded in 1881 under the name “Giletta Frères éditeurs,” which is among the oldest French publishing houses.

Jean Gilletta has become a “brand” representing the landscape of the Riviera over time, whether it is artistic, cultural heritage, tourism, or commerce.

The insight he once had on his native land has become the memory of our region and is an integral part of our mental landscape.

The photographer aimed to distribute his images as widely as possible and did not limit himself to traditional printing of his photographs; he also opted for the medium of postcards early on.

His postcards, which made him famous under the name Gilletta, as well as the reproduction of his photographs in tourist publications, contributed to his recognition.

Through five main themes—Nice, the capital of vacationing; Nissa la bella; Across the hills and valleys; Under the Azure along the Coast; and Current Events in Images—the exhibition showcases the richness and evolution of the city of Nice, the variety of angles chosen, and the serious or humorous tone given to several photos.

These works immerse visitors in the inherent time with a contemporary reinterpretation of some photographs through enlargement, colorization, and digital reproduction on modern media.

All his images assembled at the Masséna Museum allow the public to discover the emotions, grandeur, beauty, or simplicity of a landscape that was the reason for Jean Gilletta’s existence, if not his passion.

This exhibition allows one to see the past of the city of Nice, recognize certain streets of the city, and be carried away by the memories of that era.
